Description

The course addresses the goals and methods of assessing exposure to chemical and physical agents in workplace and community environments. The course emphasizes critical and analytical discussions of readings in the scientific and professional literature. Students participate in the learning process through presentations, class discussions and a semester team project.

Topics include:

• Exposure Assessment: Historical and professional perspectives
• Characterization of Industrial Processes for Exposure Assessment
• Biological Levels of Exposure and Dose
• Workplace exposure models: Job/task exposure matrices.
• Biomarkers of Exposure, Effect and Susceptibility
• Applications to Environmental Epidemiology and Risk Assessment
• Ethical aspects of Exposure Assessment
• Team semester project

Course Approach:

There is no textbook for the course. Assigned readings are drawn from current scientific and professional literature. The course is taught in a seminar style with individual and group presentations together with questions and discussion.

• Exposures of Firefighters
