College of Health and Human Sciences Students win Prestigious Engineering 2020 Awards for 2011

On September 20, 2011, the Engineering 2020 Workshop took place in the Stewart Center at Purdue University.  The theme this year was:  “Prevention through Design: Designing a Safer Tomorrow through Engineering Today.”  The goal of this annual workshop is to develop and improve state of the art educational and instructional materials in the science and engineering disciplines for today’s students, and tomorrow’s leaders.  Deans Leah Jamison and Chris Ladisch participated in the workshop and offered their vision and support toward the goals of this workshop, especially since it involved a university wide invitation to all faculty and students at Purdue and beyond.  As part of the workshop there was a Student Prevention through Design Innovation Competition that included a Poster and PowerPoint presentation.  Of the 19 submissions from across the university, Dr. McGlothlin’s students had four submissions: 1) “Minimization of Radiation Exposure and Reduction of Musculoskeletal Disorders in a Nuclear Pharmacy,” by PhD. Student Sandra S. Cole; 2) “Ergonomic Design and Evaluation of a Clinical Teaching Laboratory for People with Disabilities of the Lower Limbs,” by Masters student Wei-Chun Chen, 3) “Prevention through Design of Knee and Back Musculoskeletal Disorders among Ambulance Personnel,” by PhD student Michael White, and 4) “Ergonomic Assessment of Surgical Hand Tools and Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) among Female Gynecologists and Obstetricians Performing Laparoscopic Surgery,” by Masters student Jing Huang.  Of the four submissions, Dr. McGlothlin’s students finished in first and third place.  Wei-Chun Chen finished in first place with a $1,000 cash award, and Sandra Cole finished in 3rd place with a $250 dollar award.  This is the first time students outside the college of engineering have won these awards and we are so very proud of their accomplishments.  Congratulations to Dr. McGlothlin and his students on this very prestigious award.  For more information about the Engineering 2020 initiative, please see the following website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Engr/Academics/Engineer2020/
