Global Presence of School of Health Sciences: Namibia in Africa

The School of Health Sciences has extended its influence to African nations. Recently, a new partnership has been established with School of Health and Applied Sciences at Polytechnic of Namibia. This partnership has a specific focus on environmental health and radiation safety for both research and training programs. Dr. Zheng and Dr. Freeman visited Polytechnic of Namibia in Windhoek in June 18-25, 2012. During their visit, the Purdue team visited Namibia Uranium Institute under the Chamber of Mines of Namibia, inspected an open mining site belonging to Angola Gold Ashanti in Navachab, and presented the guest lecture on lead exposure and toxicity. A reciprocal visit by Dr. Moyo, Dean of Namibia School and Dr. Izaak took place between June 27 and July 3, 2012. The Namibia team met the faculty and unit heads of HSCI, Biology, Nursing, Mathematics, Physics, and Office of Radiation and Environmental Management, to learn the curricular and procedure matters. This partnership is expected to assist the Namibia to create its nation's first environmental health science program, as the environmental protection is now listed as a major political agenda in this fast developing nation. In addition, the HSCI will assist Namibia to create its first health physics educational program to train the qualified personnel to monitor and control radiation safety. Namibia is the world 4th largest producer of uranium; building a nuclear power plant of its own has been in their developmental agenda. Perceivably, through this partnership, Purdue's School of Health Sciences will make a significant impact on the radiation safety, not only in Namibia but also in Africa for our more than 60 years' experience in this field.
