School of Health Sciences - Robert W. Elkas 1989 Distinguished Alumnus
Dr. Robert W. Elkas received a B.S. in Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1944. He received his Ph.D. degree from Purdue University in 1947, with a major in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
He accepted the position of Assistant Director, Quality Control, Merck Sharp and Dohme in 1947, which he held until 1955. He then became Assistant Director, United States Pharmacopeia, in 1955 until 1960.
Employment at Lederle Laboratories began as Technical Assistant to Director of Quality Control in 1960. This position was followed by Manager, Pharmaceutical Quality Control, in 1961, and then Director, Quality Control, in 1972 until 1986. In 1986 he was promoted to Assistant Director, Quality Management, and in 1989 he was promoted to Director, Quality Management, the position that he presently holds. Dr. Elkas and his wife Irma have two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, and one son, Thomas.
